Sometimes bending down can help you regain your priceless dignity.
Long ago, a young Norwegian man traveled across the ocean to France to apply to the prestigious Paris Conservatory.
During the audition, despite his best efforts, the examiner failed to admit him.
Penniless, the young man went to a bustling street not far from the conservatory, tightened his belt, and began to play his violin under a tree.
He played piece after piece, attracting countless listeners.
Finally, the hungry young man held out his violin case, and the onlookers readily took out money and placed it inside.
A scoundrel contemptuously threw the money at the young man's feet. The young man glanced at the rogue, bent down to pick up the money from the ground, and handed it to him, saying, "Sir, your money fell on the ground."
The rogue took the money, threw it back at the young man's feet, and arrogantly said, "This money is yours now; you must take it!"
The young man looked at the rogue again, bowed deeply to him, and said, "Sir, thank you for your generosity! You dropped your money earlier, and I bent down to pick it up for you. Now my money has fallen on the ground; please pick it up for me too!"
The rogue was stunned by the young man's unexpected action. He finally picked up the money from the ground, put it in the young man's violin case, and then slunk away. Among the onlookers, a pair of eyes had been silently watching the young man; it was the examiner from before. He took the young man back to the academy and ultimately admitted him.
This young man was named Bill Sardin, who later became a well-known musician in Norway. His representative work is "Stand Tall and Proud."
When we're at our lowest point in life, we sometimes face unwarranted contempt; when we're struggling to survive, we sometimes encounter people who trample on our dignity. Resisting them is our instinct, but it often emboldens those lacking knowledge and morality. Instead, we should respond with reason, demonstrating and upholding our dignity with a tolerant attitude. Then you'll find that no evil can stand firm before justice.
Sometimes, bending down is what you gain, but what you reclaim is your priceless dignity!
