The best character has nothing to do with education or wealth.
01
A few days ago, I saw a touching news story.
A group of sanitation workers in Wuhan were quarantined in a hotel because they were cleaning a hospital.
After 14 days, on check-out day, the hotel manager, Cheng Yu, checked the rooms while tears streamed down her face.
She went into nine rooms and found each one spotless.
It turned out that these sanitation workers felt that they shouldn't leave their hotel rooms messy, as it would only cause trouble for the hotel staff.
So, they unanimously cleaned their rooms thoroughly before leaving satisfied.
This is a group of people with limited education, doing some of the city's most tiring and dirty work.
But they possess the cleanest and noblest souls.
Cleaning the rooms reflects their character and refinement in the smallest details.
This reminds me of another news story I read.
Last June, Huo and his girlfriend were caught by the police for repeatedly evading fares by "buying short and riding long."
According to the investigation, over the past six months, Huo and his girlfriend evaded fares 40 times, totaling approximately 2,000 yuan.
Ironically, Huo and his girlfriend were not unable to afford the fares; on the contrary, one was a PhD graduate with an annual salary of 300,000 yuan, and the other was an accountant at a trading company.
Bai Yansong once said, "One can live without a degree, but not without knowledge, and certainly not without character. Character is the highest degree; the unity of virtue and talent is true wisdom, true talent."
Talent and virtue are the best, talent without virtue is poison.

In real life, there are many people whose virtue and position do not match.
Last July, Li, a 35-year-old PhD graduate from Tsinghua University studying in the United States, intended to travel from Shanghai Hongqiao Station to Jiaxing South Station.
However, due to his own negligence, he mistakenly boarded the G7325 train instead of the G1337 train.
Just as the train was about to start moving, Li realized something was wrong. In an attempt to "make up" for his mistake, he pulled the emergency brake without thinking, causing a five-minute delay.
When questioned by the police, Li calmly defended himself, saying, "I just acted on impulse."
People like Li are quintessential egoists.
Highly educated but lacking in basic decency, they are driven solely by their own selfish desires.
Every choice they make is based on their own interests, without any consideration for others.
In Li's eyes, a five-minute delay due to emergency braking is insignificant.
But it's crucial to understand that every train's operation is interconnected.
A delay in one train can affect the operation of many subsequent trains and even cause serious accidents such as rear-end collisions.
Bi Shumin once said, "A person can be educated, but still lack manners.
It's like someone who can eat constantly, but whose stomach doesn't absorb nutrients; all their efforts are in vain, and they remain emaciated."
No matter how capable or highly educated a person is, without good character, they cannot become an excellent and trustworthy person.
As the saying goes, virtue comes first in everything, and character comes before action.
Character is the foundation of a person's standing in society, their way of being, the basis for handling affairs, and the key to planning. During the
epidemic
, a news story about farmers donating vegetables to the front lines of epidemic prevention and control brought tears to many eyes.
On the evening of January 28th, Li Fuguang, a farmer from Kaifeng, Henan, along with his two brothers from the same village, Li Kailong and Ding Xiaoqiang, pooled together 10,000 yuan and loaded 16,000 jin (8 tons) of fresh carrots from their own land onto a truck, transporting them to Wuhan overnight. After
10 hours of non-stop work, the three arrived at the Wuhan highway toll station the next day at noon. The 16,000 jin of carrots were all used for the meals of frontline medical staff.
The hardships and long journey did not wear them down. In an interview, they honestly said,
"Once we've made up our minds, we don't regret it. A little suffering is nothing."
It's said that disasters reveal character, and life and death reveal the heart.
Character has nothing to do with wealth, age, or status; it's about a person's upbringing.
Similarly,
Wang Donglin and Cheng Long, migrant workers from Longnan, Gansu, heard about the outbreak in Wuhan and traveled to the First People's Hospital of Jiangxia District, working as loaders.
"Those with money contribute money, those with strength contribute strength. We are farmers; although we don't have much money, we can do our part."
During the day at the hospital, the brothers helped move bottled water, rice, bread, and fruit. After finishing their work each day, they quietly returned to their truck, eating instant noodles when hungry and drinking bottled water when thirsty.
At night, the brothers slept in their truck. It was very cold at night, and to save on fuel, they could only turn on the air conditioning for a short while and then turn it off, making do night after night.
When asked why he did this, Wang Donglin smiled and said, "When the country is in trouble, why can't we step forward and make a contribution?"
There are no heroes who fall from the sky, only ordinary people who step forward.
Besides him, there are countless others, both seen and unseen, known and unknown, ordinary people who silently contribute their strength, bringing us the most genuine感动 (gǎndòng, a feeling of being deeply moved).
Emerson said, "People think that the expression of good and evil is from obvious actions; but they don't realize that they have already revealed their character unconsciously."
The most touching thing in the world is not talent, nor wealth, but character.
In the face of disaster, this kindness of thinking of others is undoubtedly the best character a person can have.
Hu Xueyan, an outstanding representative of the late Qing Dynasty business world, led a highly legendary life.
His success, besides his extraordinary talent and courage, also stemmed from one crucial factor: "holding an umbrella for others."
In life, always having an altruistic heart and thinking of others in everything you do will ultimately benefit yourself.
Your good character is your passport to a better future.
The Greek poet Menander said, "A person of good character shines with their own light, wherever they go."
May your character shine brightly amidst the vast sea of people and the long years to come.
